There are 2 reasons why you may want to change your humidifier settings on your humidifier:
1) To optimise your comfort
2) To minimise the power output of the machine
It is important to know that there are no right or wrong settings with the humidifier it is purely designed to make the CPAP experience more comfortable.
The ResMed AirSense 10 device has an automatic humidifier setting which will regulate itself based on the relative humidity of the environment around you. This is based around what ResMed believes to be optimal humidity settings. Of course, each person is different, so custom changes are available to the humidifier settings.
The attached video shows you how to get out of Auto humidity mode and into manual mode. Within this mode you have the ability to change the moisture setting and also the temperature of the tube.
If you are using a battery to power the machine and you are conscious of using too much power, we suggest turning the humidity setting to 0 (or off) and the tube temperature to off.
Manually adjusting your humidity settings will take some trial and error to find the optimal settings. Keep in mind, as the seasons change, the need for humidity may change too.
You may also find that changing your settings may result in water getting in your tube. If this happens, we want to turn the moisture level down and/or the tube temperature up.

Hi,
I want to turn the temperature down but I don’t have a climate control setting, just humidity level. I’m sure I’ve changed it before.
I’m using the AirSense 10 Elite.
Thanks
Jenny
Jenny, thanks for your message.
Make sure your tube is clicked in when changing the settings. If this doesn’t work, then perhaps you may need to replace your tube so it activates the setting.
Hope this helps.
Andrew
I’m new to having the ResMed AirSense 10 Device only 1 month now. I have a heated hose and a dream wear mask. My heat and humidity have been on the auto mode. Now I am experiencing a stuffy nose so bad that I can’t breath and felt scared. I would adjust my dream wear mask but still have a stuffy nose and now a very congested chest and coughing a lot. The water hardly moves during the night using very little and I sleep an average of 7 hrs. a night without getting up anymore at all which is good. Should I be turning the humidity and heat down because of this? I did not have these issues when I first started using it.
Firstly, ensure your heated tube is working properly.
Then, try having the tube under your cover. If anything, you may need to turn the humidifier up. With these settings, there is no right or wrong, just whatever is comfortable, so experimenting is encouraged.
Generally if people are blocked in the nose we encourage more humidity to break this down.
Should the tank run dry every night?
Hi Steph, it depends. What have you got your humidifier settings set on? what is the climate like where you are?
Hi I have a. resmed I brought it last year. I had no problems but last 3 days I have woke up struggling to breathe. I feel like I’m drowning. My tube has water droplets and I think the water is going into my lungs its very scary.
I have humidifier on 5 and the temp on 29 it is also set on manual. . The weather her is cold 4 degrees when I wake up can u help me with what number I should put it on thank you
Tracey, lets go down to the other extreme. Lets do 2 and 22 and build up from there.
I have a nasal mask ! My question is why do I wake up every morning with a runny nose And sneezing a lot !
Anna, it is a tough one to answer. As a general rule, if there are issues with runny or stuff nose, we tend to suggest higher humidity and tube settings to start with then troubleshoot from there. I hope that helps.
My AirSense 10 Machine has started stopping after a few hours use and displays ‘tubing blocked, check tubing’.
There is no issue with the tube although I have noticed more moisture in the tube.
Also, once I reset the machine. The air then feels warm and such a pressure that I feel like I can’t breathe out.
I have spoken to the techs where I purchased the machine but they have offered no explanation.
Hi Kevin, the blockage message will likely be because of the built up moisture. Unless I see the machine, I won’t really be able to advise on how best to go about getting it sorted out. If you think there is a fault, I advise going back to where you bought it and getting it sent back to ResMed for review.
I wake up during the night because there is water built up in my mask. I have switched humidity from auto to manual and set it as low as two and still have the water build up. Should I increase the temperature?
Yes, try increasing the temperature. Also, try putting your tube under the blanket to try and avoid any draft hitting your tube which can bring about changes to the humidity output too.
I have an airsense 10 autoset cpap with nasal pillows head gear. When I first started to use it I had humidity set at 4 and no heated hose and after a week of use started to sneeze and have runny nose. I switched to the heated hose and set the humidity and heat level to auto and that worked for a while and now I have the sneezing and runny nose again. Should I go back to the manual control still using the heated hose and change the heat and humidity up? or down?
Mitch, there is quite a bit of trial and error involved with humidity. I suggest playing with manual settings.
Hi, I have a resmed for her auto 10, I use a mask mask. Every morning I wake with a dry mouth, my humidity level is on 7. What is causing my dry mouth, any ideas?
Thanks
Kerry
Kerry, perhaps your mouth dropping open? you could get your CPAP data looked at which could provide some clues.
My old ResMed CPAP gave up the ghost a couple of months ago, and my new AirSense 10 has caused me a very stuffy nose ever since, and lots of rainout. I’ve tried auto settings on the humidity and tube temperature as well as manually adjusting them up and down in various combinations. I can tell when the air is warmer or cooler, but other than that the results are basically the same. The ambient humidity is fairly high 80-90%–it’s winter here–and we keep the house thermostat set at 62 F at night. What else can I do? Is there a way for me to tell whether the machine and tube are working properly?
Some good questions here.
Is it possible to try sleeping with the tube covered? If there is a draft or the hose gets in contact with cool air this can cause these effects. The main problem to fix first is the rainout. The stuffy nose is going to be a bit trickier. Has the stuffy nose coincided with any illness or new medications? Have you used humidification with CPAP in the past.
Try putting your machine lower than your head level, gravity will help the water droplets to drain back down.
I seem to be getting sores from the mask, I clean the tube and mask regularly, what causes this, and what can I do to stop this.
Which mask Scott?
I have an Airsense 10 and use nasal pillows.
My problem is that no matter what hose temps or humidity settings I choose, I have a dry throat and mouth in the mornings. I cant seem to get enough intake of humidity. I have tried going with auto settings and manual settings. Nothing seems to work. I have even tried going with the max humidity setting of 8 and have tube temp in mid 80’s doesn’t seem to matter. I also use a chin strap to eliminate mouth breathing.
Odd thing is that I get great readings the next mornings….stumped
Kevin, thanks for your message. Perhaps the next step is to consider a mouth mask? Do you have a statistic for the leak?
I have difficulty using a face mask. Feel claustrophobic. Leak is usually between 10 and 20 every night..
room temp is normally around 71 F…would it make sense to lower the hose temp down into the 60 degree range and have a high humidity #.
Water tank volume does decrees every night in the reservoir..Just need to find the right combo of settings , because the machine works fine..
Thanks
I’d be going high tube temp and high humidity
Looks like there may be some residual leak still which I dare say would be contributing. I think if we can continue to reduce the leak figure, the mouth issue will slowly improve.
Hi Kevin, I am having the same problem as you. No matter how I adjust the temp and humidity, I still get a dry throat and chapped lips, using a full face mask. The two previous generations S8 & S9 were very comfortable, but the S10 seems to be much worse, affecting my sleep quality.
Hi Spencer, what do you have your humidifier settings at?
My humidifier has been turned off for some time. How do I turn it back on as only hose temp. appears on the options shown on machine. No mention of humidifier.
Hi Jim, which machine are you using?
I hAve a ResMed 10 the air that’s come Out of my tubings is very warm
Hi there,
I have just gone from a P10 to Eson 2, however I seem to have a good seal and am sleeping approx. 6 1/2 hours but for the last 2 mornings I have been waking up with a dry mouth. I really hope that the Eson 2 will prove to be satisfactory for me and that I will be able to avoid resorting to having to utilize a chin strap hopefully.
Thank you for your wonderful Column… VERY HELPFUL. I HAVE A RESMED AIR SENSE 10 AND HAVE NASAL ALLERGIES. I AM USING A NOSE PILLOW MASK. I PUT THE HUMIDITY TO FIVE. WHAT CAN I DO SO I DON’T HAVE DRY THROAT? thank you in advance
Keep trying to increase the humidity and tube temp and see how that fares
I have a ResMed 10 and now that the cooler weather has graced our presence.. I’m curious as to what my humidifier/ Tube temperature should be set too? When winter comes around im curious as well because I know the temperature has to be adjusted.
Ty.
Hi Heather, it is a bit of trial and error with the settings until you find what is comfortable. We don’t really have a default level for the seasons…
Hi, I have an Airsense 10 Autoset with a nasal mask. I have my humidifier and temperature settings on manual settings which I change during the year. While I sleep OK about 15 mins after I get up I get a load of catarrh in my throat which hangs around for an hour or two. Should I be moving my temperature down closer to the ambient temperature?
I’d experiment with more humidity to see if it helps break it down
I use a FFM that is awesome and does not leak but I am still getting dry mouth wake ups every night!! I’ve had this problem many years. How open should my mouth be with the FFM.? I’ve done every mouthwash, etc imaginable. I also have Bipap. I had my pressure lowered which improved things but still have the same problems!! Even full humidity does not help.
Kevin, dryness can be tricky to fix. have you ever tried a nasal mask? are there medications you are using which may be contributing?
I have a Resmed 10 with heated tubing and F30 full face mask. I was waking up with dry mouth so I turned humidity from a 2 to 3 and temperature at 80. Room temp is 62. Hose is usually under blanket. No more dry mouth but I now have water droplets in my mask and also between the mask frame and cushion. I don’t want to decrease the humidity – will Increasing the tube temperature alleviate this problem? I have read you mention a tube wrap – is that ever used with a heated tube? What are the negatives of having a high tube temperature? Thanks!
Joan, you could try the wrap with a heated tube.
Why is my water reservoir running out of water before I wake up?
Hi Scott, It could be happening because of mask leak, settings being too high or a fault with the humidifier. Is there somewhere you can take it for a look?
