Everybody sleeps in different positions throughout the night. A common question that we get asked is “What is the best CPAP mask for side sleepers?”

The question was recently posed in the Sleep Right Australia – CPAP Support Group, with the most popular answer being the ResMed AirFit P10 nasal pillow mask.

The reason for this is the P10 is small and easy to manipulate through the night. Our own experience with the mask has shown that the simple strap either side of the cheekbone allows for the mask to sit comfortably and securely in the nostrils throughout the night.

The AirFit P10 is not the only mask however that is suitable for side sleepers. The tip is to keep the mask from being bumped on your pillow if you can. This can include getting your head as near to the edge of your pillow as you can and letting the mask “hang” over the side. There is a pillow designed specifically for this technique.

The ResMed AirFit N30i and the ResMed AirFit P30i are both newly released masks that are shaping up to be a nice alternatives, with the tubing situated at the top of the head allowing for a clear line of vision in front of your face.

Before going out and buying a new mask (especially if you find your current one comfortable), see if you can change your pillow technique to suit your current equipment.
